No.1 ‘Loweco’

Builder/type: R.A.Lister ‘Autotruck’

Works number/year built: 20449/1942

Previous bases: Kelby Sand & Gravel Co. Lincs.; Hoe Hill Tile Works, Barton-on-Humber; Abbey Light Railway; Poppleton nursery railway, nr. York.

Notes on the prototype: A burned out wreck when acquired and restored by Peter in his garage before the existence of the railway. Fitted with a petter diesel engine replacing the original petrol engine and fitted with a rudimentary cab. It was used extensively in the construction of the railway, and sadly also during it’s demolition. It was fitted with air brakes and an air whistle to enable it to haul passenger trains, which it did mostly on quiet days.

Notes on the model: The model uses the main brass casting for the loco frames, axleboxes and ballast weights from the Roy Link / KBscale kit. The kit depicts an as-built Lister Autotruck loco, with the bonnet off-centre to the left and with sides concealing the motor. Loweco, due to it’s none-standard engine, had the bonnet centrally and without sides, leaving the air-cooled engine exposed and daylight through the loco round about it. Therefore I couldn’t use the kit as intended, but David Janes of KBscale was kind enough to supply me some of the castings to modify. It uses a chassis made especially by Brian Madge, originally intended for 009 but with the wheels pushed out to 14mm gauge. The motor is in the back of the cab with the driver sat on it, with a drive belt between it and a lay shaft with worm gears driving both axles. The rest of the model is made of brass and plasticard.
