Welcome
The original Abbey Light Railway was a small 2′ gauge railway near Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds, UK. It was owned by Peter Lowe, a retired lecturer at Kitson College in the city and supported by volunteers, including my father and I. The railway existed to house Peter’s collection of ex-industrial and military rolling stock, which included 11 internal combustion locos and one battery-electric. When he passed away in 2012 the collection was sold and is now dispersed at good homes around the country.
The railway itself was lifted in 2013 and the site has returned to nature.

The ALR lives on in model form. I started modelling the ALR in O-14 a few years before closure and first exhibited the first iteration of the layout in 2014. Since then it has developed into a larger layout depicting almost the whole railway and fleet of locos and rolling stock, with a few ‘what if…’ additions.
The layout is based in Devon and available to be booked to appear at model railway exhibitions or similar events.
